===Championship Grands Prix=== | ====Pre-season====
{| class="wikitable sortable" style="font-size: 85%;" | * Ensign pulled out of Formula One after a disappointing 1979 season. Their entry was purchased by Teddy Yip and his Theodore Racing Hong Kong outfit.
! | |||
! Race | * Giancarlo Minardi elected not to commit to a full season of Formula One with his Scuderia Everest team, instead focusing on Formula 2.
! Track | |||
! Date | * Emerson and Wilson Fittipaldi sold their stake in the Alfa Romeo works team to Euroracing, who gained the team title sponsorship from Phillip Morris' brand Marlboro in the process.
! Pole position | |||
! Fastest lap | * Boro did not return for 1980 after the Hoogenboom brothers fell out with Eric Broadley and Lola, who were set to manufacture the team's 1980 chassis.
! Winning driver | |||
! Constructor | * Dywa elected to focus on their own single-chassis Dywa Grand Prix Series instead of Formula One.
! Entrant | |||
! Report | * Interscope, VDS, Graham Eden Racing, and Sachs Racing all elected to focus on other categories as a result of FISA's new regulations which stated that teams must enter all World Championship rounds in 1980.
|- | |||
!<s>1</s> | * Team Merzario, Team Rebaque, and British Formula One Racing Team all folded after failing to pre-qualify in 1979.
| <s>RZA Asseng South African Grand Prix</s> | |||
| <s>Kyalami</s> | * Enzo Osella's eponymous team entered Formula One for the first time. | ||
| <s>24 February</s> | |||
| colspan=6 align=center|Cancelled | * The mysterious Riviera team, run by owner-driver Alberto Colombo, purchased the unraced Minardi M180 chassis from Scuderia Everest and used it to field their own entry. | ||
====Mid-season==== | |||
* Poor results from the Riviera team would see their original Ford Cosworth engine supply withdrawn and replaced by Renzo BI-3T turbocharged engines, with the chassis hastily adapted to fit.
* After a suboptimal string of results, McLaren opted to switch from Ford to Nissan power from the Italian Grand Prix onwards.
* Alfa Romeo would field their first turbocharged engine - the 115-12T, a hastily modified version of their existing flat-12 unit - at the Canadian and Caesars Palace Grands Prix.
===Driver Changes=== | |||
====Pre-season==== | |||
* Harvey Jones signed a contract with Tyrrell after impressing in his 1979 season with March. He would initially be replaced with Chico Serra.
* Lotus lined up with a brand new driver lineup as both 1979 drivers left the team in the off-season. Jody Scheckter decided to retire after a disappointing season and Thomas Nurmester left the team in protest after Colin Chapman's sizeable investment in the back marker B&S Fabrications squad hampered development of the Lotus 80B. In their place, Lotus signed rookie Nigel Mansell and Italian Bruno Giacomelli, who raced for Hesketh in 1979. Hesketh would replace Giacomelli with Eje Elgh.
* Héctor Rebaque would jump ship to Brabham after closing his eponymous team down, replacing the retiring James Hunt.
* Renault would replace Ronnie Peterson with debuting future world champion Alain Prost.
* ATS would sign Marc Surer from the defunct Interscope, alongside pay driver Ricardo Zunino. None of the team's 1979 drivers (Jochen Mass, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Harald Ertl) would obtain a full-time seat.
* Arrows signed Riccardo Patrese from Hesketh, with Valentino Nicchi moving the other way in his place.
* New team Theodore would field a lineup of René Arnoux and newcomer David Kennedy.
* Emerson Fittipaldi retired from Formula One after 1979 and was replaced by Alfa Romeo with rookie Andrea de Cesaris, giving the team the youngest lineup on the grid.
* Ligier sacked Jacques Laffite and replaced him with Patrick Tambay, whilst also giving Patrick Depailler a comeback.
* Spartec would give both Rupert Keegan and Stephen South their full-time debuts.
* New team Osella signed ex-Dywa driver Arsenio Matarazzo and Luciano Sighinolfi.
* Riviera would, alongside Alberto Colombo, field ex-Everest driver Piercarlo Ghinzani.
====Mid-season==== | |||
* After colliding with Robert Kagan at the United States Grand Prix West, Chico Serra was banned from the Spanish Grand Prix; Jean-Pierre Jarier would fill in for him.
* Alberto Colombo would step aside from driving duties at Riviera after the Spanish Grand Prix and was replaced by Ottavia Cacciatori.
* Stephen South would step aside at the Belgian Grand Prix in place of debutant Thierry Boutsen.
* Marc Surer was banned from the Belgian Grand Prix and replaced with Gabriella Mondadori.
* Arsenio Matarazzo was awarded a race ban after incorrectly starting the Belgian Grand Prix with Patrick Gaillard making his debut as a replacement.
* Ligier would bench Patrick Depailler at the Monaco Grand Prix in place of Jean-Pierre Jarier.
* Future world champion Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler would make his debut for Hesketh in place of Eje Elgh at the Monaco Grand Prix, with an agreed arrangement that would see the Frenchman also race at the French and British Grands Prix.
* Ottavia Cacciatori was replaced by Riviera with Freddy Kottulinsky before the San Marino Grand Prix due to financial reasons.
* René Arnoux would walk from the Theodore team after the French Grand Prix and was replaced for the rest of the season with Silvio Bachot.
* Having been deemed responsible for a three-car pileup at the start of the British Grand Prix, Masahiro Hasemi was awarded a race ban and replaced with Hans-Joachim Stuck.
* Chico Serra suffered a season-ending crash at the British Grand Prix and was replaced for the duration of his absence with Ingo Hoffmann.
* Elio de Angelis was also injured in a crash at the British Grand Prix which saw his Alfa Romeo team opt for a revolving door of substitutes in his place. After hastily signing Gabriella Mondadori to cover the German Grand Prix, the team would turn to René Arnoux, giving the Frenchman an opportunity at the Austrian Grand Prix to restart his F1 career. Unfortunately for them, Arnoux opted to instead crash out of the race on the first lap, which incensed the team so drastically that he was immediately fired afterwards. Michele Alboreto would make his F1 debut for the team at the Italian Grand Prix and Kevin Cogan would do likewise at the Canadian Grand Prix.
* Hesketh would elect to replace Eje Elgh with Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler for the rest of the season from the Austrian Grand Prix onwards.
* Ligier would again bench Patrick Depailler, this time at the Canadian Grand Prix in place of Jacques Villeneuve.
* Marc Surer was awarded another race ban from the season-ending Dubai Grand Prix. ATS originally wanted Gabriella Mondadori to substitute for him again, however due to the Dubai race organisers rejecting Mondadori's licence as "fraudulent", they were required to run Jean-Pierre Jarier instead.

The 1980 Formula One season was the 31st season of Formula One. Reigning Constructor's Champions Williams entered the season with an unchanged line-up of World Champion Alan Jones and Gilles Villeneuve, and looked to have the car to beat with the FW08. Challenge would come in the early part of the season from Nelson Piquet who, now in his second full-time season of Formula One, remained with Brabham and took victory in two out of the first three races.
Teams and drivers
Team Changes
Pre-season
- Ensign pulled out of Formula One after a disappointing 1979 season. Their entry was purchased by Teddy Yip and his Theodore Racing Hong Kong outfit.
- Giancarlo Minardi elected not to commit to a full season of Formula One with his Scuderia Everest team, instead focusing on Formula 2.
- Emerson and Wilson Fittipaldi sold their stake in the Alfa Romeo works team to Euroracing, who gained the team title sponsorship from Phillip Morris' brand Marlboro in the process.
- Boro did not return for 1980 after the Hoogenboom brothers fell out with Eric Broadley and Lola, who were set to manufacture the team's 1980 chassis.
- Dywa elected to focus on their own single-chassis Dywa Grand Prix Series instead of Formula One.
- Interscope, VDS, Graham Eden Racing, and Sachs Racing all elected to focus on other categories as a result of FISA's new regulations which stated that teams must enter all World Championship rounds in 1980.
- Team Merzario, Team Rebaque, and British Formula One Racing Team all folded after failing to pre-qualify in 1979.
- Enzo Osella's eponymous team entered Formula One for the first time.
- The mysterious Riviera team, run by owner-driver Alberto Colombo, purchased the unraced Minardi M180 chassis from Scuderia Everest and used it to field their own entry.
Mid-season
- Poor results from the Riviera team would see their original Ford Cosworth engine supply withdrawn and replaced by Renzo BI-3T turbocharged engines, with the chassis hastily adapted to fit.
- After a suboptimal string of results, McLaren opted to switch from Ford to Nissan power from the Italian Grand Prix onwards.
- Alfa Romeo would field their first turbocharged engine - the 115-12T, a hastily modified version of their existing flat-12 unit - at the Canadian and Caesars Palace Grands Prix.
Driver Changes
Pre-season
- Harvey Jones signed a contract with Tyrrell after impressing in his 1979 season with March. He would initially be replaced with Chico Serra.
- Lotus lined up with a brand new driver lineup as both 1979 drivers left the team in the off-season.
- Héctor Rebaque would jump ship to Brabham after closing his eponymous team down, replacing the retiring James Hunt.
- Renault would replace Ronnie Peterson with debuting future world champion Alain Prost.
- ATS would sign Marc Surer from the defunct Interscope, alongside pay driver Ricardo Zunino. None of the team's 1979 drivers (Jochen Mass, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Harald Ertl) would obtain a full-time seat.
- Arrows signed Riccardo Patrese from Hesketh, with Valentino Nicchi moving the other way in his place.
- New team Theodore would field a lineup of René Arnoux and newcomer David Kennedy.
- Emerson Fittipaldi retired from Formula One after 1979 and was replaced by Alfa Romeo with rookie Andrea de Cesaris, giving the team the youngest lineup on the grid.
- Ligier sacked Jacques Laffite and replaced him with Patrick Tambay, whilst also giving Patrick Depailler a comeback.
- Spartec would give both Rupert Keegan and Stephen South their full-time debuts.
- New team Osella signed ex-Dywa driver Arsenio Matarazzo and Luciano Sighinolfi.
- Riviera would, alongside Alberto Colombo, field ex-Everest driver Piercarlo Ghinzani.
Mid-season
- After colliding with Robert Kagan at the United States Grand Prix West, Chico Serra was banned from the Spanish Grand Prix; Jean-Pierre Jarier would fill in for him.
- Alberto Colombo would step aside from driving duties at Riviera after the Spanish Grand Prix and was replaced by Ottavia Cacciatori.
- Stephen South would step aside at the Belgian Grand Prix in place of debutant Thierry Boutsen.
- Marc Surer was banned from the Belgian Grand Prix and replaced with Gabriella Mondadori.
- Arsenio Matarazzo was awarded a race ban after incorrectly starting the Belgian Grand Prix with Patrick Gaillard making his debut as a replacement.
- Ligier would bench Patrick Depailler at the Monaco Grand Prix in place of Jean-Pierre Jarier.
- Future world champion Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler would make his debut for Hesketh in place of Eje Elgh at the Monaco Grand Prix, with an agreed arrangement that would see the Frenchman also race at the French and British Grands Prix.
- Ottavia Cacciatori was replaced by Riviera with Freddy Kottulinsky before the San Marino Grand Prix due to financial reasons.
- René Arnoux would walk from the Theodore team after the French Grand Prix and was replaced for the rest of the season with Silvio Bachot.
- Having been deemed responsible for a three-car pileup at the start of the British Grand Prix, Masahiro Hasemi was awarded a race ban and replaced with Hans-Joachim Stuck.
- Chico Serra suffered a season-ending crash at the British Grand Prix and was replaced for the duration of his absence with Ingo Hoffmann.
- Elio de Angelis was also injured in a crash at the British Grand Prix which saw his Alfa Romeo team opt for a revolving door of substitutes in his place.
- Hesketh would elect to replace Eje Elgh with Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler for the rest of the season from the Austrian Grand Prix onwards.
- Ligier would again bench Patrick Depailler, this time at the Canadian Grand Prix in place of Jacques Villeneuve.
- Marc Surer was awarded another race ban from the season-ending Dubai Grand Prix. ATS originally wanted Gabriella Mondadori to substitute for him again, however due to the Dubai race organisers rejecting Mondadori's licence as "fraudulent", they were required to run Jean-Pierre Jarier instead.
