The 1977 Formula One season was the 28th season of Formula One. Jody Scheckter stayed at Ferrari to defend his title, with 1976 title rival Carlos Reutemann remaining at McLaren.
Teams and drivers
Notes
- 1 Lella Lombardi was fired after the Argentine Grand Prix for poor performance. Her replacement was 1976 Japanese Grand Prix winner and Lotus refugee Patrick Tambay.
- 2 Patrick Nève was fired after the South African Grand Prix for poor performance. His replacement was Leonhard von Gottorp
- 3 David Purley opted to focus on managing LEC after the Spanish Grand Prix.
- 4 Tony Trimmer left Iberia Airlines after the Tuscan Grand Prix, to be replaced by Gabriel Château.
- 5 Michael Tyrrell purchased Wheatcroft Racing before the British Grand Prix, and undertook driving duties alongside Otto Stuppacher. After failing to pre-qualify and a poor performance in the Tony Brise Trophy, Wheatcroft ran out of money, and Michael Tyrrell was never seen again in the F1 paddock. He would be arrested for drug trafficking, and it was revealed that his buyout of Wheatcroft was a money laundering scam.
- 6 Following an impressive drive in the Tony Brise Trophy, Tyrrell signed Robert Kagan, after releasing the under-performing Héctor Rebaque.
- 7 Patrick Tambay suffered ankle injuries in a collision with Alan Jones and Emerson Fittipaldi at the Dutch Grand Prix, and was out for a race. His replacement for the German Grand Prix was German touring car ace Hans Heyer
- 8 Alan Jones was extensively injured in a collision with Patrick Tambay and Emerson Fittipaldi at the Dutch Grand Prix, and was out for 5 races. He would be replaced by Patrick Depailler for the Canadian and Italian Grands Prix, and Elio de Angelis for the remaining Grands Prix.
- 9 Emerson Fittipaldi was extensively injured in a collision with Patrick Tambay and Alan Jones at the Dutch Grand Prix, and would not return to the cockpit until the 1978 Spanish Grand Prix. He would be replaced by Jean-Pierre Jarier on loan from Renault.
- 10 Riccardo Patrese moved to Renault to fill in for Jean-Pierre Jarier. LEC signed Anne Schröder in his place.
- 11 Patrick Depailler would be benched for two races to evaluate his 1978 replacement. Elio de Angelis would take the seat for the Italian Grand Prix, and Gilles Villeneuve would take the seat for the Canadian Grand Prix.
