Williams Grand Prix Engineering Limited is a British motor racing team and constructor currently racing in Formula One. They are one of the most successful Formula One constructors of all time, winning its last Drivers' and Constructors' Championships in 2016. As a result of financial problems and a downturn in the team's performances, in December 2018 the team was sold to an Italian-German investment holding. The team would be sold yet again in January of 2021 to a consortium led by former world champion and FOM chairman Jacques Villeneuve, who would become team principal from then onwards.
The team was founded in the late 1960s by Sir Frank Williams as Frank Williams Racing Cars, and was known as such until Walter Wolf bought a 60% stake in 1976, changing it to Wolf-Williams Racing. They also took over the assets of the Embassy Hill team that had become defunct after the death of its team owner, Graham Hill, and so the Wolf-Williams FW05 was essentially a renamed Hill GH2. Although Wolf had planned to take over the team the following year as well as installing new management, his plans fell through at the last minute and Frank Williams bought back Wolf's stake before the start of the 1977 season, with the team renamed once again to Williams Racing. Since then, Frank Williams and Patrick Head were in charge of the operation for the next four decades (Head was also the technical director until 2004) as they led the team to several Drivers' and Constructors' Championships.
Italian outfit Scuderia Adriatica, whose team principal Marco Benciani held a 5% share in the controlling holding, formerly raced under the Williams Junior Team banner in Eurasian Formula 3. Other than that and a technical agreement, there was no further connection between the two entities. The two outfits would cease to be involved with one another after the team's second selling.
