The 2006 Formula One season was the 57th season of Formula One. Constructor's champions Renault lost their title to Ferrari, as James James Davies took his second title. The championship was prematurely decided at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as the only other serious contender for the title, Kimi Räikkönen suffered a horrible accident which caused a torn ACL in the right leg, multiple bone fractures in the left leg and a dislocation of his tibio-fibular joint, injuries that would keep him out until the start of the 2008 season, leaving James James Davies to have a free run at the championship. Points-wise, the 2006 season proved to be the most dominant season of a single driver in F1 history, as Davies scored 83% of the maximum points available for a driver, breaking Michael Schumacher's record of 80%, set in 2002, a record that stands to this day.
Reigning world champion Fernando Alonso was not able to challenge for a repeat, as the RA106, whilst a competitive car and a significant improvement over the last BAR car, was not capable of challenging for wins on merit. The 2006 season saw many new teams: Sauber was bought by BMW and turned in their works effort. Honda and Red Bull created B-teams to promote talented drivers, Red Bull purchasing Minardi's facilities and entering the Squadra Toro Rosso, and Honda financing a F1 entry of Super GT Series team Super Aguri. Toro Rosso saw the debut of Robert Doornbos, who'd earn a promotion to the main team during the season, whereas Super Aguri debuted V8 Supercars champion and later ARWS co-founder Frank Zimmer. Toyota and Williams both failed to repeat their 2005 form, neither team taking race wins in 2006.
