The European Grand Prix was a race on the Formula One calendar. The European Grand Prix is usually held when a European country is already holding another Grand Prix.

It was first held in 1979 on the Brands Hatch circuit. Until 1978, the European Grand Prix was not an actual race, but an honorific title awarded by the FIA to one Grand Prix in Europe. This tradition returned as a one-off in 2019, when the Cyprus Grands Prix were designated the European Grands Prix to celebrate Cyprus joining the European Union 15 years before.

History

1970s

The concept of an honorific European Grand Prix fell out of favour in the mid-late 1970s after a number of controversial nominations. The 1977 season saw the Soviet Grand Prix nominated, but the race did not live up to the honour after organisers allegedly mixed up the Italian and American flags for winner Mario Andretti. The 1978 season saw the Mugello Grand Prix nominated, but this again would prove controversial due to the double-booking with Dywa GP by the race organisers and the domination of the race by the Brabham BT46B "fan car".

The honorific status of the race was dropped in 1979 in favour of a more traditional Grand Prix. Brands Hatch would host the first ever European Grand Prix as the British Grand Prix rotated back to Silverstone.

1980s

In 1980, talks for Silverstone to hold the European Grand Prix fell through early in the year. The Dubai Grand Prix was scheduled in it's place, but the race proved unpopular with drivers and teams alike and did not return for 1981. Brands Hatch would again host the European Grand Prix in 1981.
