Notes
- 1 Eddie Irvine would sign to the Jordan team on a part time contract, driving for them when he did not have existing commitments in various Japanese racing series. Teo Fabi would substitute for Irvine in the races for which he was not available.
- 2 Following a post-race technical inspection at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Arrows team's cars were found to be in violation of various regulations and thus the team was excluded from the following race in Canada.
- 3 The Williams team would withdraw from the Canadian Grand Prix in protest at what they perceived as the FIA's unjust treatment of the Arrows team.
- 4 Didier Artzet would suddenly fall ill before the Canadian Grand Prix and would be replaced at short notice by Beau Brandenburg.
- 5 Mika Häkkinen would break his legs in an accident at the Canadian Grand Prix and would be rendered out of action until the Japanese Grand Prix; he was replaced by 1988 world champion Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler for the duration of his absence.
- 6 Oreca dismissed Sophie Fabron after repeated poor performances after the British Grand Prix; Robby Gordon would replace her during races where he did not have clashing commitments in IndyCar, with Jérôme Policand covering for Gordon when he was unavailable.
- 7 Neil McEwan suffered an injury after a crash at the Belgian Grand Prix and was replaced at the following round by Alessandro Zampedri.
- 8 Heinz-Harald Frentzen was banned from the Italian Grand Prix as a result of his participation in McEwan's crash in the previous round and was replaced with Rickard Rydell.
- 9 Mark Blundell was sacked by Lotus after the Italian Grand Prix and was replaced with Eric van de Poele for the rest of the season.
- 10 Luca Badoer was benched by Scuderia Italia in favour of Kazuki Fushida for the Japanese Grand Prix in order to fulfil a commitment to engine supplier Mugen-Honda.
