Formula One
1987: Coloni
By 1987, Fushida was driving for the Italian Coloni outfit. The Coloni team spent much of the season towards the back of the grid, with Fushida often failing to qualify. However, Fushida took his and Coloni's only points finish with a sixth place at the Portuguese Grand Prix.
1988: Williams
Fushida's Honda connections landed him a drive with the leading Williams team alongside Nigel Mansell. Despite the far superior car, Fushida again only managed a single point - taking a sixth place in Australia. Fushida would however set a record that season, by finishing in 7th place a record 7 times that year, a record only equalled by Daniel Melrose in 2019.
1989: Benetton
In 1989, Fushida signed for the Benetton team alongside Belgian Thierry Boutsen. After two failures to qualify, Fushida was dropped by the team and replaced by Roberto Moreno.
1990: Brabham
Fushida made a return to the Formula One paddock at the Mexican Grand Prix with the Motor Racing Developments Ltd team, replacing David Brabham after the Australian had a disagreement with the team bearing his surname. However, this only lasted 4 races, as Fushida was released from the team following disputes with his mechanics, and being accused of dragging the team down, and was replaced with Robert Kagan.
1991: AGS
Fushida missed out on a full time seat once again for 1991, but after Jack Christopherson was promoted to Williams mid-season, he replaced the Brit at the struggling AGS team from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards. He would start one race that season, his home race at Japan, where he would finish 14th. The AGS team folded at the close of the 1991 season, once again leaving Fushida out of a drive.
1992: March
A new year lead to another stumbling team knocking on Fushida's door part way through the season, this time that team being the March squad. Fushida would intially drive at one of his home races at the Pacific Grand Prix, failing to pre-qualify. However when full-time driver Arie Luyendyk left the team for Larrousse, Fushida found himself in the car again at the San Marino Grand Prix. Fushida would see the season out in the March car, however due to the team's lack of performance they would not manage to qualify for a race until the Italian Grand Prix. The car was reliable however, so Fushida would finish 3 out of the 4 races he started, his best being a 12th place at Monza. The team would go bankrupt shortly after the Australian Grand Prix, meaning Fushida found himself unemployed for the fourth season running.
1993: Scuderia Italia
With another year beckoning without a full-time drive, Fushida was able to leverage his Honda connections to get himself a reserve driver role at Scuderia Italia. As part of the arrangement he would get to participate in his home race, where he would retire at the end of the race but be classified 14th in his only appearance.
1994: Various teams
Mugen-Honda switching their engine supply to Oreca in 1994 meant Fushida would gain a full-time race seat alongside the team's existing driver Neil McEwan. However, after a 9th place finish at the season opener in Brazil and retiring a race later on home soil he would then find himself replaced with free agent Mika Häkkinen, himself having been demoted at the start of the year to a reserve role by McLaren. Bitterly, Häkkinen would go on to score points on his very first outing for the team, showing what Fushida could've missed out on. Nevertheless, after a few races on the sidelines, the accidents of Bernd Schneider and Pedro Lamy meant that a vacancy at Simtek would arise which Fushida was able to take. Taking the wheel at the French Grand Prix, the Japanese would race for the team until the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a best finish of 15th at Hockenheim. After the summer break however, Fushida found himself outbid by Italian Teo Fabi who could bring more funding to the beleaguered team which again saw the former out of a race seat. Fushida was able to make one last appearance in 1994, buying himself a seat at the rapidly collapsing Lotus at the Japanese Grand Prix where due to the team's financial issues him and teammate Alessandro Zanardi would deliberately fail to qualify their cars with token lap times.
1995: Larrousse
1995 brought a new opportunity for a substitute drive, this time with Mugen-Honda's new partner of Larrousse. Fushida would agree to participate in the Pacific and Japanese Grands Prix in place of regular driver Mike Boullier. In his first substitute outing, the Japanese driver would go on a roll, scoring his first points in over 6 years with a sensational 3rd place finish - the race also marking his first podium visit.
