The Tyrrell Racing Organisation was an auto racing team and Formula One constructor founded by Ken Tyrrell which started racing in 1958 and started building its own cars in 1970. The team competed in Formula One from 1968 until 1998, after which point it became BAR because of its buyout by British American Tobacco.
History
1976
The team enjoyed great success in their early days in Formula 1, however this would later change.
In 1976, Ken Tyrrell had plans for a revolutionary six-wheeler car coming into the season, but eventually the P34 was banned from racing. Tyrrell then had to make a new design in limited time - the soon-to-be Tyrrell 008 - but it turned out to be an outright disaster. While the car was reliable, its pace was hopeless and Tyrrell's best results were only a handful of ninth place finishes. As the cherry on top, their disappointing season made its climax in Italy, where they shook the racing world with a double DNPQ. Jose Carlos Pace and Alan Jones tried their best, but to no avail. Tyrrell finished the season with no points, 13th in the WCC.
1977
1977 was a much more promising year, with the new 009 chassis unveiled. It indeed proved to be a very competitive challenger, but unfortunately the reliability was dreadful - with Tyrrell's first (and only) double-finish all season happening in the penultimate race in the United States. It was in that race where rookie Didier Pironi scored the best finish of the season with a 4th place (after managing two sixth places earlier in the year), securing 8th place in the Constructors' Championship with a total of 5 points.
1987
By 1987, Tyrrell's high-flying days as a BMW factory team were well and truly over, as the German giants had already left the sport at the last minute and despite its high competitiveness during the Turbo Era, its high cost of the driver lineup and car development put a massive dent into Ken Tyrrell's finances. Scrambling to find a cheap deal, Tyrrell turned to his old friends Ford who obliged and supplied the team with its non-turbo V8 engine, the DFZ. The drivers for this season were two Brits: Martin Brundle and Jonathan Palmer, and while each of them bagged a podium, the overall low reliability of the 1987 season meant that their 9 points were only enough for 10th place out of 14 teams. Tyrrell was thus once again a midfield outfit.
