Formula One

1981: Lotus

Palmer would make his Formula One debut for Lotus at the 1981 Swiss Grand Prix, replacing 1980 world champion Alan Jones who had been banned for one race. In doing so, Palmer would be one of the few drivers to make their debut in the #1 car.

1987-1988: Tyrrell

By 1987 Palmer was driving for the Tyrrell team alongside fellow Briton Martin Brundle. Palmer failed to make much of an impact all season apart from an unexpected third place in the season-ending Mexican Grand Prix.

Palmer's second season wasn't much better - his best result being a sixth in the Detroit Grand Prix.
