The 1957 Formula One season was the eighth in the history of Formula One. Jack Brabham, Gordini and Alexander Racing Team entered the season as defending champions. The season would be marred by the loss of Eugenio Castellotti, who was killed during a private test session. Stirling Moss and O.S.C.A would take the upper hand in the first half of the season, with a slower but more reliable O.S.C.A. allowing the Brit to lead the driver's championship over a faster but more unreliable Jack Brabham. However, with Moss only finishing one of the last five races, Brabham was allowed to capitalise and went on to take a victory and a second place, taking the title battle down to the wire at the season-ending United States Grand Prix. Another Brabham victory and retirement for Moss meant that Brabham would become the sport's first three-time world champion.

Notes:
- 1 - Isabelle Haskill lodged an entry for the Belgian Grand Prix, but did not arrive at the circuit.
- 2 - Ferrari entered a fourth car in memory of the tragically deceased Paco Godia who had died in an accident at the 1956 Scottish Grand Prix whilst racing for Scuderia Ferrari. The car, an identical Ferrari R560 to which Godia had been driving in his final Grand Prix, remained in the garage all weekend draped in a Spanish flag, before being symbolically withdrawn.
