The 1976 Formula One season was the 27th season of Formula One. Niki Lauda and Ferrari returned as reigning champions to defend their titles, but he would be tragically killed at the Soviet Grand Prix. His team-mate, Jody Scheckter, would take four victories on his way to winning the world championship by five points over McLaren's Carlos Reutemann. A championship round was held in Japan for the first time, with the Fuji Speedway playing host to the Japanese Grand Prix.
