The Tyrrell Racing Organisation was an auto racing team and Formula One constructor founded by Ken Tyrrell which started racing in 1958 and started building its own cars in 1970. The team competed in Formula One from the early 1970s until 1998, after which point it became BAR because of its buyout by British American Tobacco.

History

1976

In 1976, Ken Tyrrell had plans for a revolutionary six-wheeler car coming into the season, but eventually the P34 was banned from racing. Tyrrell then had to make a new design in limited time - the soon-to-be Tyrrell 008 - but it turned out to be an outright disaster. Tyrrell's best results were only a handful of ninth place finishes, and their disappointing season made its climax in Italy, where they shook the racing world with a double DNPQ. Jose Carlos Pace and Alan Jones tried their best, but to no avail. Tyrrell finished the season with no points, 13th in the WCC.

1977

1977 was a much more promising year, with the new 009 chassis unveiled. It indeed proved to be a very competitive challenger, but unfortunately the reliability was dreadful - with Tyrrell's first double-finish all season happening in the penultimate race in the United States. It was in that race, where rookie Didier Pironi scored the best finish of the season with a 4th place (after managing two sixth places earlier in the year), securing 8th place in the Constructors' Championship with a total of 5 points.
