The 1980 Race of Champions was a non-championship Formula One race and the third running of the Race of Champions. The race was originally scheduled to be held at Brands Hatch on the 20th July, but safety concerns following the British Grand Prix saw the race cancelled on safety grounds. A group of team owners lead by B&S Fabrications' Bob Sparshott and Theodore's Teddy Yip managed to relocate the race to Thruxton circuit for the August Bank Holiday weekend. However, the race failed to attract the support of leading Formula One teams or FOCA supremo Bernie Ecclestone. In addition, the rescheduled race was met with opposition from FISA President Jean-Marie Balestre plunging the future of the few permitted non-championship races into doubt.
