Martini managed to fight his way past Fushida in the final stages of this race, securing Minardi one point.

1987’s Mexican Grand Prix decided the world championship of that season. However, with this being the fourth race of the season, this was a mathematical impossibility. However, a race can be thrilling without having the world title be decided. The midfield was sure ready to provide the excitement demanded.

At front, the battle for the lead was quickly erased when polesitter JEV failed to make a decent start, dropping down the field behind Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger. This allowed Ayrton Senna to run away from the field at high speed, taking a very healthy lead, looking like the guaranteed winner.

However, winning a Formula One race is one of the hardest jobs in motorsport and every little error can be punished harshly. This proved to be the case when Ayrton Senna failed to consider Gauthier’s desire to take the racing line back as soon as humanly possible. This led to a crash which took both cars out, giving Berger the win.

Behind them, Voeckler managed to overcome Prost, giving McLaren an extremely important 1-2 after their loss in the Principality. Arrows got both cars in the top 5, adding points to their total. After the spot behind the two turned into sixth place, Palmer, Fushida and Martini had a tough battle for the position, ending with the latter on top.
