Report:

Being lapped by McLaren twice becomes more acceptable if you score a point that way.

Ayrton Senna truly likes the street circuit in Monaco, he was very hopeful for success. A dry qualifying saw him come out on top, easily dominating both sessions on Friday and Saturday to take his second pole position of the year 1988. He had the best position coming into the race and with the heavens opening up, it seemed like he was able to use his entire skillset.

However, there are always annoying rivals to contend with: Voeckler won the start and went on to lead the first race. The wet track making overtaking even harder than usual. Thankfully, Ferrari were quick on the draw and managed to get Senna (and later Alain Prost) past the French McLaren driver, allowing Senna to score a dominant victory after two hours and 68 laps.

The weather demanded tribute from everyone: it was truly a masterpiece to keep your car out of the unforgiving walls, let alone achieve a worthwhile result. Many great stars such as Martin Brundle and Valentino Nicchi had their race end early through no fault but their own. Thierry Boutsen was hit by Alessandro Nannini at high speed, thankfully nobody was hurt.

Where there is chaos, there is opportunity. Underdogs and other backmarkers can have a go at the points when many others fail. Riccardo Patrese was ready to pounce on those chances, getting himself up the order and surviving for a points finish. Kazuki Fushida’s late mistake also gave a point to Lotus – Derek Warwick got sixth place – a very crucial development for the British team.
