Report:

Nigel Mansell fighting for his spot with any means necessary had a significant impact on the result.

A new season is always a hopeful time for every driver on the grid. Until the first qualifying session, anyone can believe they got what it takes the win the Formula One world championship. However, if Brazil is any indication, this year will see a hot battle between McLaren and Ferrari for the richest prize in our sport.

Ayrton Senna was the man of the hour(s) in qualifying, coming out of it with his 8th consecutive pole, including the final seven of the 1987 season. Alain Prost, who finished well behind the Brazilian in the qualifying session, was not worried: Prost knows points are handed out in the race and so it would be decided on Sunday.

Indeed it turned out pretty bad for the Brazilian: Nigel Mansell jumped everyone at the start, taking the lead through the first corners and then establishing an iron-like defense. Only Gerhard Berger and Alain Prost were able to fight his way past the Williams lead driver with Senna and Voeckler not able to progress.

This proved crucial, as Mansell was not able to go the speed of the cars that had gotten past him. Gerhard Berger was in an extremely good position when his tyres failed him, ending his race. Alain Prost had no technical gremlins and was able to win the first race of the season, being joined on the podium by JEV and Senna.
