Rossi Earns Fourth Pole in GTSS’s Return To Europe
Matteo Rossi secured his fourth pole position of the season during the qualifying session for the GT Super Series Round of Germany at the Nurburgring.
It leaves the Italian one off of the count for most in a season that is shared by Frank Zimmer in 2o17 and Ricardo Llosa in 2016 at five. He would get clear laps in both of his qualifying runs, and would put his Aston Martin DBR9 three tenths clear of the second fastest qualifier, being championship leader Chris Winter. The American himself would be a further tenth and a half clear of third place qualifier Fabian Rei in his factory Lister Storm.
Behind the Korean driver would be the pair of factory Ferraris, with championship contender Evgeny Restov sharing the second row with Rei. Restov’s time was two tenths off of his main championship rival in Winter and a further three off of the time set by Matteo Rossi. Joining Denis van Walwijk on the third row of the grid is Joey Alliot in the Carson Corvette, completing the lockout of the first three rows by Manufacture Entry cars.
Qualifying seventh and the first of the Independent Class cars was Koyomi Setou on her debut for Best in the World Motorsports in their Lamborghini Murciealago. She was the only Independent driver within one second of the time set by Rossi. Joining the Japanese driver on the fourth row of the grid was Sam Winton driving for his own team. It was a strong recovery from the Brit after his team scrambled to fix a mechanical issue that plagued his Lister Storm GT on his out lap on the start of the session. His team managed to get his car back on track with five minutes remaining in the session and he put up the second quickest time for an independent on his first flying lap.
Darren Older Jr. returns to the Commonwealth Corvette co-piloted by Independent points leader Valeri Kozar, he starts tenth overall for the race on Sunday in the middle of the second pack of Manufacture entries. In that group is the second Solvalou Lamborghini, both Pagani Zondas and the second Carson Corvette that was qualified by Li Qi.
