Riccardo Gabriele Patrese (born 17 April 1954 in Padua, Italy) is an Italian former racing driver known for his appearances in Formula One.

Formula One

1977: LEC & Renault

Patrese made his competitive Formula One debut at the 1977 Spanish Grand Prix for LEC Refrigeration Racing, where he failed to qualify. His first race start came at the Tuscan Grand Prix, where he finished in 16th place.

After Renault driver Jean-Pierre Jarier replaced the injured Emerson Fittipaldi at the Fittipaldi squad after the Dutch Grand Prix, Patrese replaced Jarier effective for the final seven races of 1977. Patrese made his debut for Renault at the German Grand Prix, where despite out-qualifying team-mate Jean-Pierre Jabouille he did not finish the race, spinning out on Jabouille's dropped oil after an engine failure.

1978: Scuderia Everest

Patrese joined the Scuderia Everest team for 1978 alongside Piercarlo Ghinzani. His best result was an eighth place in the British Grand Prix.

1979: Hesketh

The ailing Hesketh outfit was Patrese's destination in 1979 alongside fellow Italian Bruno Giacomelli. Like the year before, his season was pointless - his best result being a 10th place in the Spanish Grand Prix.

1980: Arrows North Star

Patrese opted to move once again in the 1980 season when he signed for British team Arrows North Star Racing alongside Frenchman Gabriel Château. The switch paid off immediately, with Patrese able to score a first ever point in F1 with a sixth place finish at the season-opening Argentine Grand Prix.

1987-1989: Ligier

By 1987, Patrese was racing for the Ligier Loto team along with René Arnoux. Patrese scored points twice in 1987, his best result being a fourth place finish in the Italian Grand Prix.

Patrese remained alongside Arnoux for another year in 1988 - this time only taking one points finish - a fifth place in Monaco.

1989 saw Patrese joined by another Frenchman in the form of Yannick Dalmas. Patrese failed to make the points on any occasions.

1990-1991: Larrousse

Patrese swapped Vichy for the Paris-based Larrousse team in 1990 - signing a two year contract, slotting into the lead car alongside Singaporean driver Isabella Noriko. The move to Larrousse was a masterstroke on the part of Patrese - as the Lola-Lamborghini was unexpectedly the best car outside of the "big four" teams in 1990 and as such Patrese and Noriko were regular points finishers. Patrese managed a very popular third place finish at the French Grand Prix - the team's best ever finish. Patrese was unfortunately injured in an accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix and was replaced for the Belgian Grand Prix by Mauricio Gugelmin. Patrese returned full of fire and finished the season well - with impressive drives in the Italian and Australian Grands Prix drawing praise from pundits and fans alike.

Alas, despite the heights of 1990 - Larrousse was back to being a fairly average midfield team in 1991. Patrese managed only a single points finish all season with a fifth place in the Pacific Grand Prix at Autopolis.
