Jean-Pierre Jacques Jarier (born 10th July, 1946 in Charenton-le-Pont, France) is a French former racing driver known for his appearances in Formula One.

Formula One

1977-1978: Renault, Fittipaldi, Alfa Romeo and Brabham

After a year with the works Renault team in F2, Jarier stepped up to Formula One alongside fellow Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jabouille - whom had also spent the previous two years in F2 with Renault.

Being a new team, Renault were forced to take part in pre-qualifying but being a well-funded and developed team they were a class above most of the fellow competitors in this regard. Reliability for the turbo-engineed Renault would be a constant bother for the pair - with both Jarier and Jabouille frequently retiring from the races.

After a horrific accident at the Dutch Grand Prix in which Emerson Fittipaldi was ruled out for eight months, Jarier was sent on loan to Copersucar Team Fittipaldi for the remainder of 1977 and the beginning of 1978, into the team's rebranding as Autodelta.

Jarier was on the sidelines for much of the season but got himself an opportunity at the Martini Racing team for the Italian Grand Prix when James Hunt was ruled out with an injury.

1981: McLaren

By 1981, Jarier had signed for Ron Dennis' Project 4 takeover of McLaren. Partnering Clay Regazzoni, the MP4/1 with its turbocharged Renault engine soon proved to be the class of the field. Jarier finally convert the potential shown in his early career to victory in the season-opening Argentine Grand Prix. However, he actually came home second on the track - Williams' Keke Rosberg was disqualified from first place on the road due to running water-cooled brakes. This early promise would not translate into consistent points finishes, with Jarier retiring from the next five races and would not win another Grand Prix until the French Grand Prix, round 10 of the championship. Despite a home victory, Jarier was clearly out of the title fight, with Rosberg emerging as the leading contender to McLaren team-mate Regazzoni for the world title. Jarier's motivation and work ethic was again questioned, as Jarier would only notch up 2 wins in the entire season compared to Regazzoni's six victories scored en route to the World Championship. At the end of the season, Jarier was cut loose by McLaren.

1982: Renault return

Jarier initially signed with Osella for the 1982 season. However, before the first race could even begin, Renault approached the Frenchman with a lucrative offer to return to the team. Jarier accepted, with Renault reportedly buying out half of Jarier's contract - with Jarier allegedly finding the remaining half from his own pocket.
