Juan Manuel Fangio (born 24 June 1911 in Balcarce, 17 July 1995 in Buenos Aires) was an Argentine racing driver who competed in Formula 1 from 1950 to 1954. A very talented sportscar and non-championship driver, he was an occasional front-runner in the early days of the championship, narrowly losing the 1950 title to Giuseppe Farina. He won two championship Grands Prix while developing a reputation as a crash-happy driver. He drove for Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, then signed for Jaguar-Aston Martin Racing, but following an accident at the 1954 Syracuse Grand Prix where he broke his legs, he was forced to sit out the following year and a half. Fearing his career to be over, Fangio announced his retirement, but was nonetheless offered a drive at Ferrari for 1956, which he accepted. He scored a podium in Monaco, but largely disappointed.
