Rhys Davies Untouchable en Route to Second Consecutive Pole

Rhys Davies secures his second straight, and third in four events, pole position during the Qualifying for the GT Super Series Round of Germany at the Nurburgring.

CWG Team MacMillan would bounce back in a big way after being thrown out of the race results for the Round of The United States and the Molson GT Gatineau with both cars being in the top six. Former F1 and ARWS champion Rhys Davies being half a second clear of the field and Darren Older Jr. putting in his best performance in Qualifying since the Round of France in sixth overall. Rhys was well in control of the session, after his first time would have been two tenths clear of second place, the additional time coming when his Michelin tires fully came up to temperature. Only Carson Speedwork’s driver Li Qi could get within half a second of Davies, and Qi’s teammate in Joey Alliot was the only other driver within a second of Davies in what was the largest gap between the top two qualifiers since Alliot won pole position in France by nearly one second.

Returning to the series after Prototype commitments, James James Davies put in the fourth best qualifying time of the day another three tenths off of the pace of Davies in his Scuderia Italia Ferrari. Half a tenth off of Davies and putting in another strong qualifying performance was Anton Robishaud in the Pagani, his fifth straight top ten qualifying performance for the factory team. The only time the Canadian has missed out on a top ten starting position thus far in 2019 was at the Round of France. Darren Older Jr. will start alongside Robishaud on the third row, with Nathan McKane being the last of the initial group of Manufacture Trophy entries and will start in seventh.

Leading a trio of Independent Trophy entries that round out the top ten was James Douglas, this being the fifth class pole position for Douglas. Directly behind him on the fifth row of the grid will be Baku Grand Prix class winner Harrison Wilkinson and Czechmate driver Phil McCracken. Douglas and Wilkinson where the last two drivers within two seconds of Rhys Davies, with McCracken being 2.1 seconds off of ultimate pace. McCracken leads a tight group behind, with the next six cars being separated by four tenths, included in that group are both of the Racing Team Solvalou Lamborghinis with current points leader Chris Winter starting fourteenth.

The current Independent’s Trophy points leader will start the Round of Germany deep in the field on Sunday, with Peter Oliver only managing to put in the twenty-first quickest time of the session. Their main competitors in Melanie Bourne start seventeenth, with Wilkinson and McCracken a part of that leading trio of Independent Trophy Starters.
