2015 F1RDS Australian Grand Prix
The 2015 Australian Grand Prix was the inaugural round of the F1RDS and took place at the Adelaide Street Circuit. It was famous for the fuel controversy that caused the entire weekend to be re-run. It eventually took place, being shortened from the initial 24 laps to 16.
Fuel Controversy
In the F1RDS, cars generally do not refuel during the race, and hence all teams filled the cars to the level required to finish the race. However, it became apparent that the fuel consumption was far higher than any of the teams anticipated which culminated in a mass retirement session circa lap 22.
The fuel was tested and it turned out that the high-octane mix burned more rapidly when tested by a engine simulation. As qualifying was run on this illegal fuel, the weekend had to be re-run after the F1RWRS race.
The events were derided by many in the RDS paddock; Jimmy Rosenforth described it as 'ridiculous' and DMR boss Liam McGuigan called it an 'absolute farce'.
