Competing for a number of different teams early on in his career, he settled down at Jaguar - Aston Martin Racing in 1953, joining the highly successful team with Tony Bettenhausen, B. Bira and José Froilan Gonzalez, later replaced by Dries van der Lof. With the team, he won two Grands Prix, the 1953 Dutch Grand Prix and the highly controversial 1955 Soviet Grand Prix.
