Arie Luyendyk
Arie Luijendijk (anglicised as Arie Luyendyk; born 21 September 1953 in Sommelsdijk, The Netherlands) is a Dutch former auto racing driver, best known for his appearances in IndyCar and Formula One.
His first appearance in F1 would come in 1978 for the Boro team, replacing regular driver Vittorio Brambilla for his home race at the Dutch Grand Prix. The car was off the pace and Luyendyk would fail to pre-qualify for the race. He would not race again that season.
Luyendyk's second F1 stint came in 1992 as he was signed to drive for the struggling March team. Saddled with an underpowered Judd engine and a three-year old chassis, Luyendyk would fail to make the grid for any of the first 5 races. He received a lifeline however as the floundering Isabella Noriko was sacked from the Larrousse team after the Spanish Grand Prix and Luyendyk was drafted in to replace her. He would start off slowly, managing a pair of 9th place finishes before scoring his first points finish with a 5th place at the German Grand Prix. He would then follow this up with an immensely popular and sensational podium at the Italian Grand Prix, elevating his team into 6th place in the constructor's championship for that year.
