Report

Qualifying

With Daniel Melrose and Sammy Jones both making the trip to Silverstone to watch the qualifying session, there was extra pressure to perform. Alberto Cara definitely delivered to close the gap to Mitchell Macklin by a point to score pole position. Rosco Vantini put his Falik Arrows on the front row ahead of Macklin and Wouter Lamberigts. Someone who did impress was Catrina Lopes who put in her best qualifying performance to be 10th on the grid while on the other side of the coin, Phil McCracken showed his race rustiness as he qualified last and 2 million miles off the pace in the process.

Race

One would have loved to have been a fly on the wall of the MRT garage if Daniel Melrose and Sammy Jones didn't have to bugger off back to Brands Hatch for the Saturday qualifying session as in the space of one lap, one MRT had made his way from 3rd to 1st off the start (Mitchell Macklin) and the other one had been shoved off the track in a concertina effect collision involving Tommy Nash and Terry Hawkin (Marie Simon). By lap 2, there was a train of cars starting to form behind Wouter Lamberigts trying to get past him and further back in the field, when push came to shove, Tanner Jason came off second best in a collision with Anton Bosevic.

The battle group behind Lamberigts reached fever pitched on lap 4 when Terry Hawkin finally lost patience with his teammate, tried a move into club and ended up losing 3 spots for his trouble. And then, on lap 5, Macklin decided that drifting through Becketts would be a good idea, with predictable consequences. At about this point, George Liquor's BMW engine went on holidays and, yet again, the pressure on him in the Holden team kept building up. The very next lap, Sani Morgan's BMW engine also blew up while Lamberigts was finally cracking to the pressure with Johannes Rueckert and Tommy Nash in quick succession.

The action at the back end of the points was getting increasingly frantic with Niko Bellic and Alessandro Marchesi having a coming together at Club before a few laps later Bellic was involved in another incident at Club, this time with Lamberigts. Back on the hanger straight and Bosevic's transmission giving up on him. The two MRTs meanwhile were making almost no progress through the field until the first pitstops. Cara's day took a turn for the worse during this phase, a huge turn in fact. The electrics in his car started playing up and before he knew it, he was out of the race and a prime opportunity to win the race. Suddenly, a whole host of people were up with a chance for the win.

One person who wasn't going to win the race was Jason who in consecutive corners was shoved off the road by Catrina Lopes at Club and then his transmission gave up the ghost at Abbey. Du Lei in the Trueba became the next retirement with her day ending beached in the Abbey gravel trap, pointing in the wrong direction. It almost seemed that the lead position was cursed this day as the next major event was new leader Johannes Rueckert's engine blowing up quite spectacularly putting him out of the race. The battle for the win now consisted of Rosco Vantini, Hawkin and Nash on track as well as the one stopping Marchesi on the timesheets.

Hawkin soon found a way past Vantini and led until the pitstops where Hawkin fell back behind the Italian before forcing his way through. Marchesi had leappfrogged the lot of them however and looked to be on course of the win except that Hawkin, Vantini and Nash were all catching him at the rate of knots on fresh rubber with Macklin, having cleared all the traffic with sheer pace and strategy, was catching the lot of them.

While all this was going on, Bellic tried the Macklin method of getting through Becketts with the same result of his Rising Ashes car pointing backwards. The action at Club wasn't dying down just yet when Hawkin tapped leader Marchesi into a spin, demoting the Italian to 6th on the road. The battle for the points were by no means done yet as in the space of a few laps Macklin had cleared both Marco Bizzari and was now catching Michael Robertson for 4th.

It almost seemed like the 15 year old Hawkin, who only turns 16 in September, in his third ever race in these cars, was going to take a memorable home victory. But, alas, it was not to be as, like on Cara's Beirao car earlier in the race, Hawkin's electrics gave up on him a few laps from the finish line. This promoted Tommy Nash into the lead just a few seconds ahead of Vantini who was trying the irresistible pace that Macklin was producing having just gotten past Michael Robertson. Marie Simon meanwhile had finally cleared Micko Glotch in the first of the Astons and made light work of Marchesi, on worn tyres, in the other Aston a few laps later.

On the penultimate lap, Glotch also got by his teammate as the leaders came up to lap Phil McCracken for the second time that afternoon. He was particularly uncooperative to Vantini which meant Macklin was able to sell one down the inside of Copse at the start of the final lap. By then however, he was too far back to do anything about Tommy Nash winning his first F2RWRS race ahead of Macklin and Vantini. Roberson finished an excellent fourth in the Simpson Motorsport car with Bizzari scoring vital points for Trueba in 5th. Simon clawed her way back to 6th after the first lap tangle with the two Aston Martins rounding out the points although Marchesi was lucky to get that point as Dave Anderson nearly rounded him up as well by the end.
