Jan Lammers (born 2nd June 1956 in Zandvoort, Netherlands) is a Formula One who drove for Team Ensign in 1979.
Before Formula One
Lammers' first job was washing cars brought to the Zandvoort Circuit for track days. When he got to try out the cars for himself, he quickly drew the attention of local driver and driving coach Rob Slotemaker, who recognised Lammers' talent and supported his career through the junior ranks. After good results in national touring car and Formula Ford races, Lammers graduated to Formula Three. He became the 1978 European Formula Three Champion in only his second season at that level, subsequently graduating to Formula One.
Formula One Career
As the new European Formula Three Champion, Lammers was in demand. He ultimately chose to sign on at Team Ensign, who had finished tenth in 1978 World Constructors Championship and World Entrants Championship. Lammers replaced Bobby Rahal and would partner Sweden's Ronnie Peterson, aided somewhat by his sponsorship from Samson Shag.
However, this sponsorship came on the expectation that he would contest the full season. Thinking they had found a loophole, Ensign took the money and then tried to replace Lammers with Timo Fuchs who also brought funds. Not only was Fuchs a downgrade on the track, he was not approved by Samson Shag: they offered the ultimatum of withdrawing their funding of the team or Lammers contesting the full season. Ensign relented, and Lammers was signed for the remaining fourteen rounds. Lammers and Ensign struggled, promtly ending up mired in pre-qualifying alongside surprisingly strong teams like Boro, Hesketh and Alfa Romeo. Lammers has yet to make the grid of a World Championship Grand Prix.
