Joie Chitwood

George Rice "Joie" Chitwood (born 14 April 1912 in Denison, died 3 January 1988 in Tampa Bay) was an American racing driver, daredevil and stunt driver. Beginning hi racing career in 1934, he won seven races in the extremely long 1946 AAA national championship, finishing eighth, and racing until 1951. By 1950, he was a works driver for Kurtis Kraft, and as such competed in two European Grands Prix in 1950. He also competed in the Indianapolis 500 for the team in 1950 and 1951, his final competitive outing.

A big proponent of safety equipment (he was the first man to drive at Indianapolis with a seatbelt), Chitwood became a hugely successful daredevil and stunt driver, coordinating stunts in many movies and testing the safety of cars and road equipment.
