Not to be confused with James Davies or James James Davies

James Richard "Jimmie" Davies (born 8 August 1929 in Glendale, died 11 June 1966 in Chicago) was an American racing driver who competed in the AAA/USAC championship from 1949 to 1963, as well as briefly in Formula One in 1950 and 1951. In ChampCars, Davies started his career with a fake licence, as he was too young to race. Under this licence, he became the youngest ChampCar race winner at Del Mar in 1949, at just 20 years and 2 months old. He later scored two more wins and finished sixth in the championship in 1955. In Formula One, his main involvement was at the Indianapolis 500 in 1950 and 1951, when it was considered a World Championship event (prior to the arrival of Sebring). In 1950, competing for Maserati, he qualified 23rd, retiring after 16 laps with an engine failure. In 1951, driving for Ferrari, he became the youngest driver to score pole position in a championship race, at 21 years, 9 months and 11 days old. He finished the race in sixth place, six laps down. He was also asked to step in at Maserati for the 1950 Belgian Grand Prix after Reg Parnell was fired from the team and Eric Brandon was refused an entry. Davies qualified 14th and finished in ninth place. It would be his only race in Europe.

Davies was killed in a midget car accident at Santa Fe Speedway in Chicago. He was 36 years old.
