The 1980 Dywa Grand Prix Series season was the third series of the Dywa Grand Prix Series. Following the chaos and controversy of 1979 Dywa Grand Prix Series season, almost all of the series' most established teams and drivers departed the series. Despite this, series organisers still announced an ambitious 14-round season.
Teams and drivers
All teams and drivers raced identical Dywa-002 chassis. However, Renzo Engineering were able to supply three sets of turbocharged engines at the start of the season, which were offered to the teams in order of their 1979 finishing positions. Only Équipe Dywa Floc'h declined the offer of turbo engines. Below, T denotes that the team secured a supply of turbocharged engines.
Driver Changes
- Nunzio Dunn left Dilbert Racing to establish his own team as an owner-driver.
Team Changes
- Equipe Dywa France lost their Vaillante sponsorship for 1980.
Mid-Season Driver Changes
- Giuseppe Rigatoni suffered a season-ending injury at Enna-Pergusa. Marco Tortellini was brought in as a replacement.
- Stefan Tapfer also suffered a season-ending injury at Enna-Pergusa. He was replaced by Shota Kakhaberidze.
- Paul Pott was injured at Imola and missed the next two races. Bern van der Westhouzen, who had previously substituted for Pott on multiple occasions in 1979, once again filled in for him.
- Eddy Marin was fatally injured in a crash at Imola. Marcin Paulauskas replaced him.
- Dom Wings sustained a season-ending injury at Spa. He was replaced by Yu Shiting, who promptly suffered another season-ending injury in the following round at Halle. Tim Floc'h returned to the cockpit from Salzburg onwards.
- Iain MacCampbell was fired by HEART DISEASE after Spa as a result of tensions within the team. "Jill Scott" replaced him at Halle, and the Earl of Sandwich from Salzburgring onwards.
- David Soufflé was excluded from the championship after bringing the sport into disrepute at Spa. He also suffered a season-ending injury at this race.
- Nikolai Zorbin was injured in a crash at Halle and missed the following three races. Dominik Nowak replaced him.
Mid-Season Team Changes
- Batman Benzi Racing was excluded from the championship for bringing the sport into disrepute at Spa.
