Australia 17 - Race I

Daniil Kvyat had not had a glorious season so far, he will be the first to admit that: his teammate is running away with a world championship that Kwjat would like to win himself, having more than double the victory total than the Russian. Today, Daniil Kvyat worked hard to reduce the advantage of Caterham’s apparent team leader, and he did so successfully, winning both of the F1 races at Surfers Paradise this year in the process.

After qualifying, that looked like a difficult sales proposal: Kvyat and his teammate where both crippled by a healthy amount of success ballast. The pole was fought for in a close three-way battle between Pastor Maldonado, Jules Bianchi and the eventual pole winner Nathan McKane. The British driver defended his lead at the start and managed to make the early laps count. In the end, a brave move by Kvyat allowed him to crack the tough nut(han).

Meanwhile, the Cassidy Conflict has caused a new development: as result of his driving yesterday, Cassidy was removed from the seat and Shinobu Katayama made a comeback after a few years off. She had not unlearned much and went on to score big after an early battle with Daniel Melrose, who managed to acquire a crucial points finish for Eni Valerian Formula Ferrari.

Melrose was the only Australian, however, who fared well. Both Will Power and Daniel Ricciardo had miserable starts and then struggled to defeat Bradley Dagnall, who showed some breathtaking defensive moves, impressing fans of old-school grindout racing. In the end, neither was able to take points. Both Power and Ricciardo must be annoyed by that and the Australian fans sure were unhappy with that development.
