AutoReject World Series |
Yangwang have operated a racing team within the AutoReject World Series since 2024. A subsidiary of BYD Automotive, Yangwang operates in the series as both a team and a powertrain supplier, the first manufacturer to use a hybrid powertrain.
In 2022 Lu Xiangyang, the co-founder of BYD, began negotiations with the newly formed AutoGP organization to discuss entry into a revived ARWS. With the debut of Yangwang as BYD's supercar and ultra-luxury brand in 2023 Xiangyang advocated for the company's entry into the series to develop technologies that can be passed onto road cars. BYD discussed whether to enter ARWS or Formula One, but the FIA's refusal to allow non-Hydrogen powertrains convinced the company to focus on an ARWS entry. One of the largest manufacturers in the world proved an attractive option for the rebuilding racing series, and the organizers granted entry to Yangwang for the 2024 season. Notably, the negotiations included a rule change to allow hybrid powertrains, with Yangwang developing a turbocharged inline-4 hybrid powertrain to replace outgoing engine supplier Renault. The team assembled its vehicles and powertrains out of a purpose-built facility in Shenzen.
AutoReject World Series (2024-)
2024
Yangwang operated a temporary European base in Banbury, United Kingdom for its debut season while it constructed a permanent European facility for the following season. The team brought onboard former World Rally Championship team manager Nils Lenngren as Team Manager.
For the 2024 season Yangwang signed veteran driver Alberto Cara and endurance racing specialist Fu Wen for its driver lineup.
