2018: Sauber

Rockenfeller made his Formula One debut at the age of 34 joining the West Sauber F1 Team, replacing former Audi stablemate André Lotterer at the end of the 2018 season. Rockenfeller was the best performing of the three Germans who occupied the second seat alongside Pastor Maldonado - his best being a seventh place in the Dutch Grand Prix.

2019-2020: Red Bull

Rockenfeller's strong performances earned him a berth at Red Bull Racing for 2019 alongside fellow German Pascal Wehrlein. Rockenfeller only managed a single points score - a seventh in Cyprus but he was retained by the team into 2020 once legendary driver Daniel Melrose joined the team. Rockenfeller was eventually replaced by Harrison Newey.
