Manuel Reuter
Manuel Reuter (born 6 December 1961, Mainz, Germany) is a German former racing driver best known for his career in Touring Car racing. Reuter is widely considered one of the greatest Touring Car drivers of all time, having won the World Touring Car Masters series in 1990.
WTCM
1988-: Zakspeed
Reuter made his WTCM debut in the inaugural season, driving an Independent Ford Sierra RS500 for Formula One outfit Zakspeed alongside Klaus Ludwig. Reuter took a single win in 1988, taking the flag in the Hockenheimring sprint race.
Ford's relationship with the team ran by Andy Rouse saw their allegiances switch to Zakspeed in 1989, bringing with it the latest spec Sierra RS500 and two new teammates in Roland Ratzenberger and Frank Biela. Reuter thrived in this improved environment and took five wins in 1989 on his way to third overall in the standings.
1990 saw defending champion Ratzenberger exit the team, with Kurt Thiim joining in his place. Reuter dominated at the turn of the new decade - taking an unprecedented ten wins and winning the overall championship at a canter from his rivals from within Zakspeed, Nissan and Audi.
A new car beckoned in 1991 with the Sierra RS500 being replaced by the Sierra Sapphire conforming to the new Super Touring regulations. Unfortunately for Reuter and teammate Biela - the new model was nowhere near as competitive as the previous car - at least in the early stages of the season.
