The Grand Prix of the Soviet Union was a race on the Formula One calendar.
History
It was first held in 1955 on the Pirita-Kose-Kloostrimetsa Circuit, but would not be held again for some time due to allegations of cheating occuring during the weekend. For the 1976 season, the race would move to the Bikernieki Circuit near Riga in Latvia. The race would again be marred, this time by tragedy, as Niki Lauda tragically perished in an accident.
The 1977 Soviet Grand Prix podium presentations were marred with controversy, as the American flags of race winner Mario Andretti and second place finisher Tom Sneva were inexplicably replaced by Italian and British flags, respectively. Race organisers blamed the display on an ‘administrative error’, although many, including FISA, believed this to be a political statement. The race was dropped from the 1978 calendar as punishment.
The race would return for 1988 season, again held at Bikernieki, alongside the Yugoslavian Grand Prix.
