Garry Rogers Motorsport is an F1RWRS team that has competed since the second half of 2013. The team is run by Garry Rogers, who operates it out of the same workshop as his V8 Supercar team. The team currently operates as a B-team for HRT, with it being used as a way to help HRT make money for 2014. This involves putting one of HRT's main drivers in the second car, while employing a pay driver at the empty HRT seat.
F1RWRS entry
The F1RWRS operation was formed shortly before the 2013 British GP, after Frank Zimmer was released from Horizon Motorsport. Frank immediately went to Melbourne to asked his old V8 Supercar boss Garry Rogers to help him form a new team. They obtained support from HRT, and quickly designed and built two chassis (it is believed that they had already anticipated an entry in 2014, but were prepared when Zimmer came along), but were not ready in time for Britain, as they hadn't yet found a second driver.
This meant that they had one race to escape pre-qualifying. Zimmer and teammate Nathan Scott, a protege of Chris Dagnall, managed to pass pre-qualifying at the German GP, and Zimmer finished the race in second place. The 6 points meant that the team skipped out of pre-qualifying for the remainder of the season. Scott finished fourth at Spa and Zimmer took two more points at the following race. Then HRT's moneymaking plan stepped in. Scott was demoted to Team Calinetic, although this started a feud with Dagnall, as his plan was to get Scott some experience on F1RWRS tracks, and didn't want him to race for a pre-qualifying team. However, he backed down. At Akrotiri Bay, Zimmer took another podium, while Ashley Watkinson stepped into the second car. Rhys Davies drove at Macau, and finished third, and decided to spend the next two races with the team, as he felt that it would be his best chance at scoring more points. However, the car's pace dropped off dramatically, with neither Zimmer nor Davies coming close to points. For the finale in Brazil, Davies decided to race for HRT again, and Zimmer needed a replacement too because he was not allowed to enter Brazil. Scott was promoted, as was newly signed F2RWRS driver Tommy Nash, and the car was once again slow.
In 2014, Scott left for DGNgineering, and HRT promoted Poppy Whitechapel from a test driver role. The car was an upgrade from the previous season's, and Zimmer scored a few points, while Whitechapel came close but the car failed whenever she had a good chance. Zimmer was replaced at Brazil by Ben Fleet, and after he caused several incidents at the Norisring in a spectacle dubbed "Zimsanity" by the media, Nash was again promoted for the next two events when Zimmer was banned. At the end of the season, after complaints from some teams that they and HRT were taking up two perfectly good entries, the two teams merged. They will continue to race as Holden, but GRM will take over the running of the HRT Young Lions F2RWRS team.
