Winfried Philippe Adalbert Karl Graf Kottulinsky Freiherr von Kottulin, better known as Freddy Kottulinsky (born 20th July, 1932 in München, Germany, died 4th May, 2010 in Karlstad, Sweden) was a German-Swedish racing driver best known for his time in Formula One. The winner of the Paris-Dakar rally, he never achieved the same level of success in Formula One, and was known as one of the first pay drivers.
Formula One
1977: Boro
Kottulinsky made his F1 debut with the Dutch Boro outfit alongside Italian veteran Vittorio Brambilla. Kottulinsky frequently failed to qualify and only finish on three occasions, his best being a thirteenth place finish in Germany. Kottulinsky was replaced by Kazuyoshi Hoshino for the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix.
1978: Shadow
1978 saw Kottulinsky make the switch to the Shadow team.
Later life
Kottulinsky continued to race into his 70s, frequently in historic races before his death in 2010.
His daughter Susanne had a near twenty year career in the European Rally Championship, driving for the likes of Audi, Volvo and Opel. His two grandchildren, Fredrik Åhlin and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky are also racing drivers - with Fredrik being a frequent competitor in the British and World Rally Championship and Mikaela forging a career in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
