1999: MasterCard Lola
After winning the 1998 Formula Nippon championship and spending that year as one of Jordan's test drivers, Motoyama was called upon by the MasterCard Lola F1 team before the 1999 French Grand Prix to replace the team's lead driver Damon Hill, who had retired from the sport citing mental fatigue. Unfortunately for Motoyama, the car was the slowest on the grid and unreliable, meaning that the highest he could finish that year was 14th at the British and Malaysian Grands Prix, and ahead of only fellow replacement driver Deanna McMahon in the championship. Motoyama would choose to return to his home country after the end of the season and the team's collapse from excessive debt.
