Francisco Godia
Francisco "Paco" Godia-Sales (born 21 March 1921 in Barcelona, died 30 September 1956 in Edinburgh, Scotland) was a Spanish racing driver. A mildly successful businessman based in Barcelona, he was also an amateur racing driver. Making his first brief foray in Formula 1 in the 1950 Italian Grand Prix, he returned a few years later, first with an aborted attempt at the non-championship 1954 Pau Grand Prix, then with a drive at Gordini in 1955. Following a high-profile accident with Consalvo Sanesi at the 1955 French Grand Prix, he was famously fired from the team before the race was ended through a pitboard message.
Signing with Ferrari before the end of the season, he proved to be a quick but unreliable driver. He scored points in the 1955 Italian Grand Prix and 1956 Belgian Grand Prix, but more often than not failed to finish. He was, with Tony Brooks, one of two drivers killed in the 1956 Scottish Grand Prix when his car left the wet track and collided with two trees. He was ejected from the car and died of major internal injuries when he collided with another tree. He was 35 years old.
As a tribute, Ferrari posthumously entered Godia in a fourth car at the 1957 Spanish Grand Prix. The car remained stationary in the garage for the duration of the weekend, with a Spanish flag draped over it in Godia's honour. The car was symbolically withdrawn from the event before the race began. To date, Godia remains the only driver to be posthumously entered into a Grand Prix.
