Gianfranco Brancatelli
Gianfranco Brancatelli (born 18 January 1950 in Turin, Piedmont, Italy) is a retired racing driver from Italy. He drove in Formula One in the late 70's, and after leaving it, became one of the most celebrated touring car drivers in the planet, winning the 1985 European Touring Car Championship.
Formula One
1976: Boro
Brancatelli's Formula One bow came in 1976 with the tiny Boro team, based in the Netherlands. Despite their size, they opted to go for hell or glory and attempted to race the entire season. Despite a fairly season bouncing in and out of qualifying, Brancatelli was able to bag a respectable eighth place at the Soviet Grand Prix - although not a points score - this allowed the Dutch outfit to finish above the likes of Penske, Tyrell and Hesketh in the constructors championship.
1977: March
Buoyed by his success in 1976, Brancatelli swapped seats with fellow Italian Vittorio Brambilla and joined the March Engineering squad - with Brambilla opting to join the Boro team. Although the March was superior to the Boro that had came before, it was still way down on most of the midfield. In the early stages of the season, Brancatelli matched his best result of 1976 with a eighth place finish at Long Beach. Brancatelli raced nearly the whole season for March, his only absence being the Japanese Grand Prix, where he was replaced by Kunimitsu Takahashi.
1978: Arrows
Brancatelli made a move again ahead of 1978, this time joining up with F1 newcomers Arrows in their first World Championship season alongside Finnish rookie Keke Rosberg.
