John Fitch
John Cooper Fitch (born 4 August 1917 in Indianapolis, died 31 October 2012 in Lime Rock) was an American racing driver. A very successful sportscar driver with multiple class wins in Le Mans and Sebring as well as an SCCA National title, he was one of the first American drivers competing in Europe after World War II. It was for his home race in 1952 that he first competed in Formula 1 for Motorsport Bleu, before an unsuccessful appearance for O.S.C.A. the following year which ended with an accident. He nonetheless accepted to drive for Assasti Millanti the following two years, before a severe accident in the 1954 United States Grand Prix left him with shattered legs, a broken pelvis and spinal damage. Returning to racing in 1961, he largely focused his remaining life on improving road safety and running Lime Rock Park race track.
