Hesketh were an English race team founded by Lord Hesketh in 1972, and which competed in Formula One from 1973 until the 1980s. The team were most notable for running a sponsorless, self-built car for notorious playboy James Hunt, with some success until late 1975, with him and the eponymous lord then departing from the team. After this blow, the team took a nosedive in fortunes they would never recover from, with financial issues plaguing the team's increasing futile attempts to qualify in its final years.
After a miserable 1977 season where the team failed to prequalify for all 16 Grand Prix that year, the team scaled back operations considerably for 1978, only contesting three World Championship races and the non-championship rounds. The team looked set to collapse at the end of the season when a merger with the similarly ailing Shadow team gave the operation the capital (and improved engine deal) to see out the year with somewhat improved results, and return to contest the full championship in 1979.
