1987-1991: Minardi
Martini drove for Minardi in 1987, alongside fellow Italian debutant Alessandro Nannini. Martini would have a good season, scoring 7 points, with a best finish of 4th being achieved twice, at Monaco and Yugoslavia for 13th in the championship, despite the unreliable Motori Moderni V6 turbo engine causing him to retire from 12 of the 16 races, and his rookie teammate Nannini beating him in the standings by virtue of a 2nd place at Dijon.
Martini would remain at Minardi in 1988, alongside another driver making their debut, Frenchman Frédéric-Maxime Voeckler. The M188 was hampered by an underpowered naturally-aspirated Ford Cosworth DFZ, meaning that Martini would only score 3 points, for 11th in the championship, with a best finish of 5th at the French Grand Prix, and again being beat by his teammate, who scored 2 5ths at the the Soviet Union and Australia.
Martini stayed at Minardi in 1989 alongside Gabriele Tarquini. His season would immediately get off to a good start at the season opener in Brazil, grabbing his Formula One podium with 3rd place. Martini scored 5 other points on his way to 12th in the championship.
Martini resigned with Minardi for his 4th season there in 1990, alongside veteran Michele Alboreto. His season would get off to a poor start, retiring from the opening round at the United States and being disqualified from the Brazilian Grand Prix and was banned from the Pacific Grand Prix for dangerous driving.
1991 saw another season of sporadic points finishes, a fourth place in the Portuguese Grand Prix being his best result. Martini finished the season in tenth overall.
1992-: Larrousse
In 1992, Martini opted to move away from Minardi in favour of a drive with the Central Park Larrousse team alongside Singaporean driver Isabella Noriko.
