Carter Simpson (born 7th June 1991 in Sydney) is an Australian racing driver, currently competing in AutoReject Nippon for Narita Engineering. In late 2018, Simpson became part of the Plus One Group driver management program. He is the cousin of former F1 world champion Rhys Davies.
Early Career
Just 9 years old when his cousin won his first championship, Simpson's interest in racing is largely accredited to Davies' success, encouragement and support. Simpson debuted in the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2007, finishing second, and Davies helped him find a drive in British Formula 3 the next year. He paid back his cousin's faith by winning the championship, and was runner up in 2009. In 2010, he moved into Formula Renault 3.5, winning a few races and finishing third at the end of the year. The next season, he dominated and took an easy championship victory. He signed to drive for Coloni in the 2012 GP2 season, and finished fifth overall, with victories at Bahrain and Monaco. In 2013, still with Coloni, he won 7 straight races, and a few more near the end of the year, to prove that he was most certainly a brilliant driver.
F3RWRS
Simpson received offers to drive for Marussia and Caterham in the 2014 F1 season, however his cousin advised him to reject them and try to find success in the F1RWRS instead. Davies used his contacts to land him a drive for ZimSport in the first season of the F3RWRS. Simpson got off to a slow start, with the highlight of his early season a podium in race 3 at Laguna Seca, however with some coaching by team principal John Zimmer, he improved enough to take ZimSport's first round victory at the Round of Belgium, scoring pole and victory in race 1. He backed this up with second place at the Surfers SuperPrix. He finished the season fift in the championship, the best of ZimSport's drivers.
F2RWRS
His efforts were enough to gain him a drive for the Holden Young Lions in the 2015 F2RWRS season, alongside Canadian Tommy Nash. He was also appointed as a test driver for the Holden Racing Team that year, with Nash and John Zimmer.
