Philippe Jean Armand "Phi-Phi" Étancelin (born 29 December 1896 in Rouen, died 13 October 1981 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French racing driver who competed in Formula One from 1950 to 1955. Etancelin's professional career spanned almost thirty years, beginning in 1926 and largely stopping in 1953. A very successful pre-War driver, he notably won the French Grand Prix in 1930 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1934. After the War, he competed in Formula One in 1950 for Motorsport Bleu, then later Jaguar Racing. After initially staying with the British team in 1951, he left due to a lack of competitiveness. In 1955, he was tempted out of retirement by the inventor François Guidobaldi to drive his experimental car in the French Grand Prix. In a race filled with bizarre events, Etancelin took to the circuit despite failing to prequalify for the event, being disqualified a few laps from the end and retiring for good to the crowd's applause, at the age of 58. He was tempted back one final time at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix by Scuderia Ferrari in an unprecedented 6-car team. He failed to qualify.
