Monika Flater (born 21 December 1995 in Salzburg, Austria) is an Austrian racing driver. She is currently driving for Team Bert Anderwald in the GTC World Cup.
Career
2012: Formula BMW
After a couple of successful karting seasons, Monika Flater's first foray into car racing was the 2012 Formula BMW Talent Cup. Despite a strong performance in the opening four rounds, she could only muster sixth in the standings following a subpar performance in the championship-counting final round at Oschersleben.
2013: German F3
Flater ascended to German Formula Three, driving in the Trophy Class for Franz Wöss Racing. Though her outdated machinery was no match for the Cup Class drivers, she dominated the Trophy Class with twenty wins.
2014-15: GP3
The following season, Flater moved up to the GP3 Series with Jenzer Motorsport. Her results were not world-beating like in German F3, but impressively consistent. She finished tenth in the standings.
Flater remained at Jenzer for 2015. Like the previous season, she was quite consistent. This time, she managed to bag a win at Yas Marina, enough for seventh in the standings.
2016: GP2
Flater continued to ride her wave of momentum, signing for Trident in the GP2 Series. Unfortunately, she completely floundered in this higher-level championship. With her only points being an attrition-aided 6th place in a sprint, Flater finished 22nd, last of the points scorers.
2017-22: DTM and part-time GTC
Following her embarrassing GP2 campaign, Flater's single-seater career was done for. A lifeline was found in the form of Team Bert Anderwald, who signed her up for a DTM gig. Gradually, she rediscovered her groove from pre-GP2, culminating with her successful title challenge in 2021. She finished third the following year, when TBA withdrew from DTM at the season's conclusion. TBA's withdrawal was part of a reallocation of resources to prepare for their ARWS campaign.
Flater also raced part-time in the GTC World Cup for Team Bert Anderwald, taking pole and P2 at the second race in Germany.
2023: ARWS and part-time GTC cont.
Team Bert Anderwald nominated Monika Flater alongside James Wilmington to drive for them in the revived AutoReject World Series. This would be Monika's first single-seater race in nearly seven years.
Flater's whole season was marked with misfortune; failing to see the flag in her first five races. At Monaco, she recovered from lap one damage to reach the top ten, but transmission failure ended her race. She was in contention for the win at the Luxembourg Grand Prix, until last-gasp breakdowns took Monika, her teammate, and rival Emma Kickert out of the race. At the Norisring, she parked in a precarious position after another breakdown, while James Wilmington went on to win the race. Two more DNFs followed at Brno and New Hampshire. Despite placing sixth in TBA's only double finish all year at Brands Hatch, issues still struck her at the following rounds. Her best two finishes were fourth places in Malaysia and Japan, sandwiching a retirement from the lead in Australia. She broke down at Suzuka and crashed out of the Macau Grand Prix to end her woeful year.
In the meantime, Flater continued her part-time GTC campaign.
2024-?: Full-time GTC
At the conclusion of her miserable ARWS season, she announced plans to compete in GTC full-time.
