Bill Vukovich

William John "Bill" Vukovich, Sr. (born 13 December 1918 in Alameda, died 30 May 1955 in Indianapolis) was a American racing driver who competed in five F1 races from 1950 to 1954, also competing successfully in the AAA championship during this time. A successful midget racer, Vukovich saw his career kick-started in 1950 when Ecurie Nationale Belge signed him alongside Charles Van Acker as two local drivers to compete in that year's Indianapolis 500. Vukovich finished 12th, behind his teammate, and was offered a drive at that year's Italian Grand Prix, where he failed to qualify. The next year, driving a Ferrari 375, he finished third at Indianapolis. He would go on to win the race in 1953 and 1954. In both years, he also competed in the United States Grand Prix for small teams, without success. He died in 1955, while in his usual position; leading the Indianapolis 500. He was 36 years old.
