Dywa Grand Prix Series |
Batman Benzi Racing was a Turkish racing team. Funded by the small oil company Batman Benzi, this team most notably raced in the 1980 Dywa Grand Prix Series season before going bankrupt and getting banned.
Early years (1976-79)
Batman Benzi Racing was founded in 1976 to help progress the career of local driver Sami Yurekendacar. Competing in Balkan junior formulae, the team's biggest success came from Yurekendacar's victory in 1977 at Preluk-Opatija.
Dywa (1980)
Batman Benzi Racing made the step up to the Dywa Grand Prix Series for 1980. Yurekendacar would be accompanied by his friend from the Balkan racing scene, Miloš Ovtapase. Despite teething issues in the season opener, Yurekendacar was regarded as one of the best non-turbo drivers, and Ovtapase recorded a fourth place in the second round. However, the increased costs of Dywa in comparison to the Balkan regionals took a toll upon Batman Benzi. To address this issue, Ovtapase would be benched for multiple races in favour of local pay drivers. For the third round at Spa, this would come in the form of David Soufflé. Soufflé crashed hard, becoming injured for several months. Soufflé sued for compensation, which the already cash-strapped Batman Benzi could not provide. Batman Benzi Racing shut down from its crippling financial troubles, and both Soufflé and Batman Benzi were excluded from the championship results for bringing the series into disrepute.
