After winning the 1976 German F3 championship, Schäfer joined Team Penske midway through the 1977 F1 season replacing Brett Lunger alongside French veteran Henri Pescarolo. Schäfer would immediately lift Penske's spirits, venturing into the top half of the Pre-Qualifying timesheets. This pace would be rewarded at the Soviet Grand Prix, where Penske advanced from Pre-Qualifying for the first time in 1977.
