Drivers and constructors
The following teams and drivers competed in the 1998 CART Championship Series season.
Notes
- 1 Vincenzo Sospiri was fired after 1 race for his poor performance at the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami presented by Toyota. His replacement for the rest of the season was JJ Lehto.
- 2 Bobby Rahal was injured in a crash at the Budweiser 500 and thus had to miss the next race. His replacement was Scott Pruett, but then Rahal extended his break until the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix. His replacement was Christian Fittipaldi.
- 3 Dario Franchitti was injured after his tyre blew out at the Rio 400k and had to sit out for the rest of the season. His replacement was Roberto Moreno.
- 4 Michel Jourdain Jr was fired from Payton/Coyne after the Molson Indy after 2 consecutive failures to qualify. His replacement was Christian Fittipaldi.
