Vaclav Malsyz (born June 5, 2000 in Brno) is a Czech racing driver. He currently drives in the AutoReject World Series for Czechmate Motorsport.
Career
His first appearance in the AutoReject system was the 2017 AutoReject 2.0 Europe Post-Season Test, in which he tested for Red Bull World Race Team. He got a drive with them for the 2018 season. At Monza, his season started off okay, with a fifth place and fastest lap in the feature, but a non-points finish in the sprint. Next came what would be the best weekend of the season for him, a double third place at Magny-Cours, leaving him second in the championship. However, he scored zero points over the next three weekends. In weekend six of nine at Zandvoort, he was seemingly back, with seventh and second, but he would only manage eight points the rest of the season. This all left him with a midfield championship finish of twelfth (earning 54 points), which though arguably disappointing was much better than his teammate, who scored in one race the entire year.
After driving for Quicktech Engineering in the post-season test, he raced for them in 2019. His sophomore campaign was much more successful; despite not recording a single race win, Malsyz obtained a total of six podiums (all of them consecutively in the second half of the season) and 114 points, which was enough for runner-up in the championship behind Red Bull junior Pierre St. Laurent.
Quicktech Engineering did not have an AutoReject 3.5 team and due to the uncertainty of the series, kept Malsyz in its FIA Formula 2 team instead. Teaming up with Australian driver Matt Grove. who had prior experience in both Formula 5000 and AutoReject 3.5, Malsyz competed in the 2020 season; he would finish 15th in the championship (scoring 22 points compared to Grove's 5). Malsyz failed to take a podium, however he managed to set three fastest laps during the season. Despite his somewhat moderate success compared to previous year's driver Louis Delétraz, it was generally considered to be a solid rookie season.
Malsyz then signed for Czech team Czechmate Motorsport (coincidentally based in Malsyz's hometown of Brno) in the new Auto2 Series championship (rebranded from AutoReject 3.5) for the 2021 season. However, the season turned out to be cancelled altogether due to funding issues by the new organizers, which left him in a precarious position. Since there were no available seats in Formula 2, he struck a deal with another Czech team, Charouz Racing System, to become the team's reserve driver for the 2021 F2 campaign alongside a guaranteed race seat at the team for 2022 season. In the meantime, to have any competitive mileage, Malsyz agreed to take part in Czechmate's GT Super Series operation for the season. He had also considered to race in the Japanese Super Formula championship, but chose not to as he thought this deal would hamper his chances at progressing up the ladder.
As promised, Antonín Charouz then gave the young Czech a full-time seat in Formula 2 for 2022 in his team; he would partner the Canadian James Wilmington in the team's second season at this level.
